Preparatory school students advance to the finals of SOP basketball competitions

Doha, March 6, 2019. The President Qatar Volleyball Federation (QVA) Ali Ghanim Al-Kuwari, closely followed up on the SOP volleyball competitions which was held yesterday morning in the QVA hall of Al Arabi Sports Club. The presence of the QVA President and the sincere faith of all the officials in talents of participants and importance of SOP activities have a positive impact on participants thus encouraging them to practice actively not only volleyball but other sports as well.

In the basketball event for preparatory schools, Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib and the Philippine International schools qualified for the final, while the Cambridge School took the third place after winning the match for the third and fourth place with the Philippine International school. The final matches for the preparatory school students will be held on April 18 and at the QBA Hall of Al Gharafa Sports Club.

Quarterfinal basketball matches saw the Philippine International school won over the Abdul Rahman bin Jassim School with a score of 25:8. Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib school beat Michael E. DeBakey High School 35:23 in one of the toughest matches at this stage. The Cambridge School defeated Abu Bakr Al Siddiq School with a score of 18:15 as a result of almost equal match between the two teams. The Lebanese school won over Ali Bin Abi Talib School 20:18. Thus four schools were qualified for the semifinals in this event.

A match for the place in finals was the subject of a tense struggle till the last moments of the competitions. In a tough game the Philippine International school managed to beat Cambridge school 22:21 what determined the winner and enabled the Philippine International school to progress to the final stage. In the same event, Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib School team won over the Lebanese school with a score of 30:16 to book its spot in the final. In the matches for the third and fourth places, the Cambridge School beat the Lebanese School 28:21 and won the bronze medal.

Highly attended by representatives of different sports institutions and schools-participants, the competitions were tough and tense till the very last minute since every school team was keen to compete in the finals.

The SOP is held annually as a collaborative effort of Qatar School Sports Federation (QSSF) and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, with hundreds of student athletes competing from all over Qatar.

The SOP committee aims to spread a culture of sports throughout Qatar’s schools and to engage the entire community in active and healthy lifestyles while retaining local values and traditions.
