Curtains come down on Tennis competitions at SOP

Doha, April 26, 2019 – Tennis and chess competitions as part of the 12th edition of the Schools Olympic Program (SOP) have reached their final stage this week, while finals in boys` football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics as well as in table tennis took place at Aspire Dome on Thursday April 18.

Tennis event witnessed the presence of a large number of officials from Qatar Tennis Federation as well as Qatar School Sport Association and SOP Organizing Committee. Those present included Rabia Al Kaabi, QSSA President along with Tariq Darwish Zainal, Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) General Secretary and QTSBF Executive Director Saad Al Mohannadi.

In ‘under 8’ age category event for girls, Devia Khandikar of DMIS School took the first place while Defenish Travide of CBSE and Saryan of Newton International Academy won the second and third places respectively.

In ’12 and under’ age category event, Mahael Al-Khunji from Noor Al Khaleej won a gold medal, Rithika Monavana and Aknasha of DPS Indian School took silver and bronze respectively. In ‘under 14’ event  Sara Hamoud of Muaither Preparatory Independent School was a gold medal winner while Linguawi of Doha Academy managed to get the second spot followed by Anjyana Golba of Birla Public School who took the third place.

In ’18 and under’ age category event, Amina Hamoud of Muaither Preparatory Independent School ranked first, Maryam Khalid of the Middle East International School – second, Bjogari of Birla Public School – third.

In ‘under 8′ age category event for boys’, Fathi Frans and Ateeq Mohammed Hassan of Abu Hanifa School got first two places respectively while Faisal Fahad of Omar Bin Al-Khattab School won the third place. In ‘under 10′ age category event, Muhammad Akram Al-Mutawa of the Tunisian School ranked first; Baradi Kumar of DMIS – second.  In ’12 and under’ age category event, Ian of DPS Indian School won a gold medal, Faisal Majid al-Khulaifi of Omar Bin al-Khattab School took silver and Faron Gupta of DPS Indian School took bronze.

In ‘under 14′ age category event, Ali Al-Yafi’i of Omar Bin Al-Khattab School with gold, Meshaal Nasser Al-Khunji of Noor Al-Khaleej School won silver and Nasser Mutawa of the Tunisian School took bronze. In ’18 and under’ age category event, Mitaeel of DPS Indian School ranked first, Lalt Akas and Falaban from CBSE School took silver and bronze respectively.


The SOP is held annually as a collaborative effort of Qatar School Sports Association (QSSA) and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, with hundreds of student athletes competing from all over Qatar.

The SOP committee aims to spread a culture of sports throughout Qatar’s schools and to engage the entire community in active and healthy lifestyles while retaining local values and traditions.
