Chess competitions at SOP conclude

Doha, May 1, 2019 –  The Schools Olympic Program 2018-2019 chess competitions for both boys and girls successfully concluded with a participation of a large number of schools. Chess, an intellectual game viewed as a brain-stimulating activity is always of great interest for both children and adults. 

Held at Jawaan Bin Jassim Model Independent School for boys, the event saw the significant attendance of various officials, including School Operator Mrs. Fawzia Al-Kuwari. Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of Qatar Chess Federation (QCF), Hamad Al Tamimi, QCF Executive Director and Dr. Salah Salem, Qatar School Sports Association (QSSA) Technical Expert, were among those present in the event as well.

In  the girls’ individual event, Giro Parsad from  Doha Modern Indian School – DMIS claimed the first place, while Niraj Akankishi of DPS Indian School grabbed the runner-up place and the third place went to Rowda Qasiba from Newton International Academy – Barwa city.

In Boys’ individual event, Sharma Takish from DPS Indian School  won the first place, his teammate Fergisi Tom of the same school siezed the second place and Rahool Balamornga ranked third.

In Boys’ team event, the DPS Indian School took first place, Ideal Indian School grabbed the second spot while the third place was shared by  Doha Modern Indian School – DMIS and Birla Public School.

After the competition Dr. Salah Salem, QSSA Technical Expert, presented a special gift to Mrs. Fawzia al-Kuwari, Jawaan Bin Jassim School Operator, as well as to Mohammed Al-Mudahka, President of QCF as a gesture of appreciation for their continued efforts to make the SOP competitions so successful.


The SOP is held annually as a collaborative effort of Qatar School Sports Association (QSSA) and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, with hundreds of students competing from all over Qatar.

The SOP committee aims to spread a culture of sports throughout Qatar’s schools and to engage the entire community in active and healthy lifestyles while retaining local values and traditions.
